The Black Caribs, a mix of the original "Yellow Caribs" and African slaves, soon outnumbered the original race and pushed the remaining members off their lands. These remaining Yellow Caribs allowed the French to settle on the islands in 1719, hoping to avoid complete domination by the Black Caribs.
