On and Around Bequia

Bequia is the second largest island in the country. An island of seafaring people Bequia's focus is still on the sea. A long history of whaling and ship building has been replaced by other water related activities. Many of the ferry operators, dive operators and sailing captains in the area call Bequia their home.

The majority of the activity on the island is clustered in the shops, restaurants and bars of Port Elizabeth located deep within Admirality Bay. Walking on the footpaths around the bay, one can find a variety of small restaurants and boutiques nestled under the frangipani and almond trees. At high season, more than 100 yachts may be anchored in the gigantic harbor. Water taxis provide transportation to the docks and carry supplies out to the yachts. Sailors and passengers from around the world give Bequia an international flavor. Several ferries visit the dock in Port Elizabeth each day carrying passengers and supplies between St. Vincent and the southern Grenadines.

Model boat shops and vendors produce amazing replicas of sailing vessels. Step into one of the shops and have a look at the fine handicraft of the boat builders. Occasionally one will find a full size boat under construction around the harbor, or along the seashore on other parts of the island.

Bequia's Easter Regatta is a famous four day affair that draws visitors from around the Caribbean. Yacht races and local boat races content with shore activities and socializing for the visitors' attention.

Gingerbread construction in Bequia Many of the buildings in Bequia are constructed with the Caribbean style "Gingerbread" trim, high roofs and pastel colors. Some of the hotels and restaurants have incorporated this style into their new buildings.

Along the southern edge of Admiralty Bay are several wonderful white sand beaches fringed with palm trees. Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay can be reached either by sea (hire a water taxi) or by land. Snorkling is worthwhile at these two spots. Farther down the southern edge of the Bay is Moon Hole, a collection of private homes built into the rocks of the island. Moon Hole is an amazing view from a boat.

On the north edge of Admiralty Bay a small Fort at the top of the point overlooks the entire bay. Views from this point include islands to the south. Mustique is only 11 miles away. Canouan and even Union Island can be seen from the point on a clear day.

Other bays around the island are good day trips for snorkling, windsurfing and swimming. Industry Bay, Hope Bay and Friendship Bay are around the eastern and southern sides of the island.

Only a short distance south from Bequia is the island of Petit Nevis, a former whaling station in the days when the area around Bequia was known as being one the best known whaling stations in the Caribbean.

Each day, trips depart from Bequia for sailing, snorkeling and cruising the areas around the island. Full day trips to Mustique or the Tobago Cays for snorkeling and sightseeing or to St. Vincent for hiking or visiting the area around Kingstown are an opportunity to experience other areas of the country without packing and moving. Ferries run frequently to St. Vincent. The trip takes only one hour and visitors can make arrangements for sightseeing on St. Vincent before taking a late afternoon or evening ferry back to their accommodation on Bequia.
